Residential Recovery Program: Mind

Ms. Jenkins assists a student in the Learning CenterThe recovery program places a high priority on education. When a resident decides to participate, his needs are assessed and a learning plan is tailor made for him.

Upon entering the Recovery Program, each individual is tested and placed in the appropriate classes. Anyone who does not have a high school diploma or equivalent degree takes GED classes and is assigned a personal tutor.

In the Career & Learning Center, we offer a variety of courses for program participants: General Life Skills; Remedial Reading; Writing Skills; Advanced Writing; Financial Planning; Typing and Desktop Publishing. In addition, both staff and volunteer instructors assist residents with resume writing, job interviewing, telephone skills and computer training.

Residents spend a minimum of 10 hours per week on education. Throughout each course, quizzes are given to test skills development. Certificates are granted to those who pass each individual course.

To expand minds beyond the classroom, Learning Center instructors periodically take residents on field trips. They have visited and written about places such as the American Museum of Natural History, The Gates and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
