Residential Recovery Program: Body

A resident manages front desk activities as part of his work therapyParticipants of the Recovery Program are assigned daily tasks to support NCYRM staff. This instills a sense of personal responsibility and helps prepare them for work after program completion.

Responsibilities include aiding in the Career & Learning Center, housekeeping, security, clerical duties, assisting at the front desk, helping with food service*, or coordinating overnight guest services. All tasks are supervised by the staff and are geared for success.

Through these projects, residents foster self-esteem and obtain practical career and life skills. By adhering to standards such as accountability and punctuality, our residents learn healthy behaviors that will aid them after they graduate.

We believe in the old maxim, "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime."

Residents are also encouraged to take care of their bodies with healthy habits. Thanks to an ongoing donation, men in the program may earn a free gym membership at a local recreational facility.

* Residents assisting in meal preparation must first attend the New York City Board of Health's food handling course.
