Mother's Day Banquet Paints Cheer on Local Faces
Saturday, May 8, New York City Rescue Mission hosted its 8th Annual Mother’s Day Banquet. The event was an uplifting experience for some of the City’s most downtrodden residents.
Throughout the day, 498 people—most of whom were shelter moms, at-risk kids, poor Chinatown residents and transient guests—were fed by volunteers like CBS2’s Chris Wragge and Fox5’s Linda Schmidt. Honorary Host Dr. Joy Browne was presented the Maria McAuley Award for her years of distinguished service to the Mission and its guests.
Guests were treated to amazing gospel and jazz music by Eddy Bishai and friends. The Walter Hoving Home women’s choir sang and shared personal testimonies that inspired everyone. And special guests Eternia and Chesney Snow brought the house down with their hip-hop duo.
Another "first" at this year's banquet was face painting. A few local artists brought cheerful color to dozens of children's faces while they waited for their meals.
In honor of New York City Rescue Mission’s banquet for homeless moms and kids, Mayor Bloomberg made an official proclamation of “Metro Moms Week in New York City” for the week leading up to Mother’s Day.
We are grateful to Western Beef for the prime rib, Disney for the DVDs and toys, and all the other organizations and individuals who contributed for this event.
