In a given year, more than 1200 volunteers serve in a variety of roles at New York City Rescue Mission. Some come once and others are "regulars," handing out meals, leading chapel services, providing medical services, and tutoring our residents in our Learning Center.


Current Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Tutor a resident towards earning his GED
  • Tutor a resident in ESL (English as a Second Language)
  • Process mail (M-F daytime)
  • Serve meals in the dining room

Guidelines

Interaction

  • Volunteers shall maintain a high standard of integrity and professionalism when interacting with Program Participants.*
  • Volunteers shall not spend time alone with one Program Participant.
  • Volunteers shall not share personal details (e.g. phone number) with Program Participants.
  • Volunteers are not to initiate or allow physical contact with recipients of NYCRM services without staff advisement and the permission of the individual.
  • Volunteers are not to engage in a private transaction involving gifts, services or money with any Program Participant.  Any gifts should be directed to or channeled through the organization.  
  • Volunteers may not accept money or gifts from Program Participants for services rendered.

Conduct

  • Volunteers are not to smoke, drink, use drugs or carry any type of weapons on site.
  • Volunteers are to engage in edifying conversation without using profanity.
  • Volunteers shall refrain from promoting a worldview that is in opposition to the Judeo-Christian worldview that is the very fabric of NYCRM's ministries.
  • Harassment of any kind is not permitted and is subject to disciplinary action. 
  • NYCRM is not responsible for the personal property of volunteers.
  • Volunteers are not authorized to use NYCRM phones, supplies and equipment for purposes not specifically related to the volunteer opportunity.

Dress Code

  • Volunteers shall wear clothing that is deemed modest by staffmembers.  Please do not wear midriff-revealing tops, short shorts, muscle shirts or anything tight-fitting.
  • Closed toed shoes must be worn in the kitchen for safety reasons.
  • Clothing shall not portray alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, sexual or violent themes.

Outside Activities

  • Volunteers are not authorized to identify themselves with NYCRM, or attempt to use their position to gain credibility for political purposes or illicit personal gain. 
  • Volunteers agree to indemnify NYCRM and/or any or its separate entities against all claims, demands, judgments, and executions that NYCRM and/or its staff may sustain arising from my volunteer actions, whether or not such claims, demands, judgments, and executions are discovered during my volunteer work.

                      

 *A Program Participant is any person who benefits from or participates in any ministry, service or program of New York City Rescue Mission.
