The New York City Rescue Mission has been serving the poor, hungry and homeless of New York City since 1872. We are always on the lookout for men and women to join us in the fight against poverty and homelessness. We have the following positions available:


Receptionist (Part-time)

This position is for Saturday and Sunday (2pm - 10:30pm) and will include some holiday work. It requires a responsive, customer-focused professional with 5+ years in performing reception and clerical tasks. The candidate must have demonstrated talent in handling high volume calls, heavy traffic flow, and answering queries.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Answer phones and direct calls to appropriate staff member
  • Greet all visitors and direct them to the appropriate staff member
  • Maintain accurate records of the daily log books
  • Greet and ensure volunteers are signing in/out with our Volgistics software
  • Maintain order in the lobby during the peak times of the day
  • Communicate pertinent information to management

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have a heart of service for the poor, underserved, homeless and hungry individuals in NYC
  • 5+ years as reception/clerical professional
  • Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office programs, emails and internet
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Must be comfortable multi-tasking during busy periods
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and willing to work in a collaborative, team environment

Other Skills:

  • A people person with the ability to make visitors feel welcomed
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and in an orderly fashion
  • Bilingual speaking preferred, but not required
  • Dealing with uncertainty
  • Sound judgement, objectivity and emotional control
  • Integrity and professionalism

Front Desk Manager (Full-time)

This position is for Monday - Friday (7am - 3:30pm) and will include some holiday work. It requires a responsive, customer-focused professional with 5+ years in performing reception and clerical tasks. The candidate must have demonstrated talent in handling high volume calls, heavy traffic flow, and answering queries.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Answer phones and direct calls to appropriate staff member
  • Greet all visitors and direct them to the appropriate staff member
  • Maintain accurate records of the daily log books
  • Greet and ensure volunteers are signing in/out with our Volgistics software
  • Distribute pantry bags to clients, and track statistics
  • Maintain order in the lobby during the peak times of the day
  • Communicate pertinent information to management
  • Record all donations-in-kind as they are dropped off
  • Direct all vendors/inspectors to the Director of Support Services
  • Log in all packages and mail
  • Join fire brigade as the first floor warden, and line of communication to the fire department

  • Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office programs, emails and internet
  • Strong verbal and written skills
